How To Treat Sinusitis With Essential Oils

After the excesses of Christmas, many of us start the New Year with both a desire to detox and a nasty case of a post-Christmas cold, which if we are particularly unlucky can become sinusitis. But what exactly is sinusitis, why does it make us feel so bad and is it possible to treat it naturally with essential oils?

Sinusitis is a relatively common condition in which the lining of the sinuses become inflamed. The sinuses are small cavities that are present in your head behind your cheekbones and forehead. In healthy patients, the mucus that is produced from your sinuses drains away through small tubes.

However, during cases of sinusitis, these channels become blocked because their linings become inflamed. The inflammation is usually caused by a viral infection that will clear up within 2 to 3 weeks. However, it is possible to help to relieve the symptoms of sinusitis which can make you feel more comfortable until the infection subsides.

The symptoms of sinusitis can include:

–  a blocked nose with or without green or yellow discharge from your nose

–  pain and tenderness around your cheeks, eyes or forehead

–  a sinus headache

–  a high temperature

–  toothache

–  a reduced sense of smell

–  bad breath (halitosis)

It is possible to relieve the symptoms of sinusitis with over-the-counter remedies; however, there are also a number of ways in which you can use pure and natural essential oils to treat sinusitis. Two of the best essential oils to use in the below remedies are lavender essential oil and eucalyptus essential oil which both acts to relieve pain and clear congestion.

Steam Inhalation

This is one of the most simple and most effective ways of relieving congestion and other symptoms of sinusitis. Simply pour approximately 5cm of freshly boiled water into a bowl and add 1 drop of lavender oil and 1 drop of eucalyptus oil. The place your face over the bowl and cover your head with a towel whilst you inhale the steam for approximately 10 minutes. Repeat this twice a day and your congestion should quickly clear.

A soothing massage will always help you feel better, but if your massage oil is made up of 2 drops of lavender oil and 2 drops of eucalyptus oil, mixed into 1 tablespoon of carrier oil, which is then massaged into your temples, forehead, cheekbones, neck, back and chest, it can also help to relieve the symptoms of sinusitis.

Use a Diffuser or Vaporiser

There are several different types of diffuser and vaporiser available into which you simply add just a few drops of essential oils which will then be diffused into the air. Using these can be especially useful in the bedroom to help you get a good night’s sleep.
