As much as we love a traditional Christmas door wreath featuring the classic combinations of red-berried holly and glistening evergreen sprigs of spruce and ivy, there is an increasing trend towards slightly less conventional wreaths. There are some lovely examples that combine the traditional idea of a door wreath with either other classic Christmas items or even something completely different! Some of our favourites include wreaths made up of dried oranges and cinnamon sticks, bauble wreaths, or even rags!
But what about something a little more fragrant, and maybe a little more lavender?! This Christmas, here at the Jersey Lavender Farm, we’re going to be making our very own Homemade Lavender Christmas Wreath. Not only will this be a great way to inject a little lighter colour into our Christmas decorations palette but an additional drop or two of our wonderful lavender essential oil will provide a wonderfully scented entrance into the house, or even suspend above a fireplace and let the heat diffuse the scent throughout the house. So how can you make one of your own?
First of all, you need to start with your wreath base. This can take a number of forms, but we think it’s easiest to use either a metal (try using a couple of old wire coat hangers) or a wooden circle or a specific oasis wreath ring. If using wooden or metal rings it is often a good idea to wrap this in raffia or ribbon to hide any parts of the base that might show.
The next step is to choose the base foliage for your wreath. Fresh or faux sprigs of spruce and ivy give a nice traditional touch, or for a lighter more country feel what about dried ears of wheat or corn. Once you’ve gathered your base foliage then this can be attached to florists wire (just wind it around the stems) and then either insert into the oasis or attached around your covered ring.
Once the wreath is fairly well covered then you can start adding your accents. We love taking bunches of dried lavender and spacing them around the wreath interspersed with mini lavender coloured baubles or bows tied from silver and lavender ribbons. Or to make your wreath an entirely lavender affair, simply cover the whole ring with dried lavender and add a glitzy silver bow to the bottom.
