Lavender Is The Colour Of The Year!

OK so it might be officially called ‘Radiant Orchid 18-3224’ but to our eyes, it definitely looks like lavender, and Pantone have announced it to be Colour of the Year for 2014!

Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute® Leatrice Eiseman said, “While the 2013 colour of the year, Pantone 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the colour wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination. An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.”

Now obviously we’re biased, but not only do we love to grow lavender, distil it and cook with it, but we also love to luxuriate in its tranquil pale purple tones. And now it seems that Pantone, the colour experts, do too. Have a look at some of the ways that you could incorporate this wonderful colour into your life.

Lavender for Interiors – the gorgeous lavender tones of Radiant Orchid (and other lavender shades) make it perfect for use around your home and other interiors. It looks wonderful when used as a background wall colour and offset with crisp white woodwork and cream and beige accessories. However lavender also works well as a complement to deep greens such as olive and hunter green. It also combines wonderfully with blue tones such as turquoise and teal and even delicate pale yellows (especially in a sunny room). If you prefer a more muted colour palette, or don’t fancy a complete redecorate, then why not bring a neutral room up to date with lavender hues in your accessories and soft furnishings.

Lavender in Fashion – where Pantone leads, fashion tends to follow, so we can expect to see an increase in lavender coloured clothing on our high streets throughout the year and into the next. Fashion designers such as Emerson by Jackie Fraser-Swan, Juicy Couture and Yoana Baraschi have all featured lavender in their spring collections and it has started to make its way onto the red carpet and our wardrobes will be soon to follow. Lavender is particularly beautiful on darker skin tones, or when paired with a vivid bright blue to make a colourful splash for any wearer.

Lavender in Beauty – surprisingly versatile, lavender hues can serve to warm and brighten many skin tones and look striking when applied around bright blue eyes. It also pairs well with red tones to create a selection of flattering lip colours. Finally a slick of lavender can bring your nails right up to date.

We also think that a wonderful way to bring lavender into your life is to stop resigning it purely to the garden. Why not add it to window boxes or grow in containers on a sunny windowsill to add a splash of lavender to your room? And then simply a few drops of our wonderful lavender essential oil into your oil burner will really help to bring the colour alive.
